A Black History Verse to Ponder

February is the month we set aside to pay tribute to African Americans who have influenced our culture. This past Sunday at church, our musician played Lift Every Voice and Sing written by James Weldon Johnson.

I grew up listening to that song as the Negro National Anthem. It was played at the end of the daily broadcast of the only Black radio station when it went off the air at sundown. Sunday while the church rose and sang, I listened and read the verses. I had always only heard the first verse and was pleasantly surprised by the last verse.

God of our weary years
God of our silent tears
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way
Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the place, our God, where we met.
Lest our hearts, drunk with he wine of the world, we forget Thee.

Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand.
True to our God, true to our native land.

May we never forget who has brought us and taught us how to overcome. May we never forget who is able to keep us from stumbling. May we never forget who is the source of our light.

Psalm 97:9 Lord, You are the Most High God. You rule over the whole earth. You are honored much more than all gods. (NIRV)

No More Wilderness

The Lord has brought you out.
The wilderness is no more.
He’s sealed shut every window and door.

The fear of the past,
The oppression you once knew
Are exchanged with His love for you.

Walk in victory today.
Yesterday is a fading shadow.
He has provided more than enough for tomorrow.

Remember the Lord your God is the one who gives you power to do these things. He does this because He wants to keep the agreement that He made with your ancestors, as He is doing today! (ERV)

Can You Hear It?

There have been many mornings I awaken with the sound of the sweetest music. It wasn’t music from a radio or an alarm. It has been love songs in my spirit. Scripture teaches us that the Lord speaks to us when we are asleep (Job 33:14-16).

What a wonderful way to wake up–to the sound of the Lord singing over us.

I pray that you experience the Lord singing over you. It is a great way to start the day.

Listen for the new song
I AM placing in your heart
Sing it aloud for all to hear.

Listen for the new song
It will lift your burdens
It will bring peace and cheer.

Listen for the new song
Bask in its melodious colors
As I whisper words of adoration in your ear.

Listen for the new song
I Am singing over you
It resounds with My love that casts out fear.
